Worksheet for Evaluating Wind Leases

Wind Turbine

Wind energy is a renewable resource where the wind power is converted to electricity by a wind turbine.

According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Michigan ranks 14th in terms of states with the most wind energy potential:

  1. North Dakota
  2. Texas
  3. Kansas
  4. South Dakota
  5. Montana
  6. Nebraska
  7. Wyoming
  8. Oklahoma
  9. Minnesota
  10. Iowa
  11. Colorado
  12. New Mexico
  13. Idaho
  14. Michigan
  15. New York
  16. Illinois
  17. California
  18. Wisconsin
  19. Maine
  20. Missouri

A Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) is a requirement that a specified percentage of electricity sold must be from renewable energy sources. Currently, the Legislature is considering RPS legislation. Michigan Farm Bureau supports a renewable energy portfolio standard emphasizing in-state production and ownership.

As the state government considers an RPS, electric companies are becoming increasingly interested in wind energy. Several electric companies are pursuing landowners to purchase wind energy easements. To help landowners in the negotiations of a wind turbine easement, below is a check-sheet developed by Michigan State University which is designed to offer some points of consideration when discussing the wind energy leases with your attorney:
